Over the past ten years, the Hydration for Health conference has become a unique international scientific event dedicated to hydration science and health benefits of water for health.

The annual Hydration for Health Conference gathers an international network of scientists and healthcare professionals and fosters emerging research. The growth and sustainability of this research field is dependent of the newer generation of scientists.

In 2018 and for the second year in a row, young researchers had the opportunity to participate to the “Pitch Your Science!” contest. During this contest, young scientists must pitch their research work to the audience how gets to vote for the winner. There is only one rule: 3 minutes to present their ongoing research and key results in a sharp and clear way.

The candidates are selected by Hydration for Health Scientific Committee based on abstract applications. Six of them get to participate to the contest and benefit from the preparation and mentoring from the members of the scientific committee.

The candidates for 2018 were the following:

  • Dr. Cory Butts from the University of Arkansas, USA
  • Mrs Gabrielle Giersch from the University of Connecticut, USA

  • Dr. Na Zhang from the Peking University Health Science Center, China
  • Dr. Damir Zubac from the University of Split, Croatia | Science and Research Center Koper - Slovenia.

They all gave top level, rapid fire presentations and the audience selected Mrs Gabrielle Giersch from the University of Connecticut to be the 2018 Young Researcher Award Winner.

Her topic focused on understanding how mild dehydration impacts sleep in humans. Mrs Giersch is currently investigating the effect of mild dehydration and subsequent dehydration on sleep time and sleep quality with subjective measures. The results of her research could have a direct impact on people’s daily life since poor sleep negatively impacts vigilance and reduce well-being.

Congratulations to Gabrielle and welcome in the hall of fame of the Hydration for Health Young Researcher Award winners!
