At the 4th Nutrition & Growth Conference in Amsterdam, (NL) a dynamic session described the importance of healthy snacking in children.

This symposium was entitled “Is snack time an opportunity to promote healthier eating and drinking habits in children?” and delivered the following messages:

Dr Jeanne Bottin, Hydration and Health Department, Danone Nutricia Research, France, spoke about "Fluid intake at snack time in chidren”.

Key messages:

  • 60% of children do not meet the EFSA recommendation of daily adequate fluid intake
  • Children who drink more water during snack are more likely to drink more water overall and to adhere to the EFSA recommendations
  • Using urinary osmolarity biomarkers, clinicals study suggest that a significant majority of children might be hypohydrated

Pr. Max Lafontan, from the University of Toulouse, France, and member of the EASO Healthy Hydration Working Group, was the chairman of the session.

He spoke about : "Snacking and Obesity prevalence in Europe”.

Pr. Luis Moreno, from the University of Zaragoza, Spain, spoke about "Healthy Snacking and Water Consumption".

Key messages:

  • Overweight and obesity in children and adolescent is an important public health problem
  • The composition of an healthy snack is water, fruits, dairy products and cereals based product
  • Water should be available at any time at school to garantee a proper hydration status
