« Make healthy hydration the new norm »

ICRNM 2018

XIX International Congress on Nutrition and Metabolism in Renal Disease

Genoa (IT), June 26th-30rd, 2018

Evidence is accumulating for the link between insufficient water intake and kidney disease. Vasopressin, or the antidiuretic hormone, is a key player in total water body regulation by its action on the kidney in order to conserve water and concentrate urine via a well-described mechanism. Increasing water intake and/or reducing vasopressin secretion may have a beneficial effect on renal function in subjects with risk factors of developing various kidney pathologies like urinary tract infections (UTI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Preventive role of water in kidney pathologies

The session will start with a lecture on the mechanism for dehydration associated kidney disease linked to vasopressin secretion. Next, the effects of a randomized controlled trial increasing water intake in third stage CKD patients will be presented. Finally, the last lecture will describe the results of a prospective randomized controlled study exploring the effect of increased daily water intake in women suffering from recurrent acute uncomplicated Cystitis. The session is held on June 29th from 13h00 to 14h30, see flyer for more information.
